The Writers Block
If I’m being honest, I have really struggled to write in the last few weeks. It’s not for lack of ideas, procrastination, writer’s block, or anything else, it’s simply from a lack of time. Now I know a lot of you might be saying you have to make time, and I understand and appreciate that idea, and I do agree, having spent a lot of energy attempting to make more time. But the truth is this, sometimes there truly is no time, and you can’t actually make more of it. Sometimes, life hits you so hard that it’s not about not taking the time to write, because there really is no time.
Being in my early thirties with a wife who works two jobs, a daughter with activities and school, and taking care of two dogs, three cats, and six chickens, not to mention my own job, most days, I’m running from the moment I wake up to the moment my head hits the pillow. And I think many of you reading this can relate (maybe not to the chicken’s thing!) Some days you feel like you’ve given everything you’ve got, you have nothing left in the tank, like you’ve worked your tail off and accomplished the day, but there’s that little voice in your head telling you it wasn’t enough, because you didn’t write that day, and now the whole day is a failure. This becomes even more frustrating when all the writing advice out there stresses writing every day!
Well, I’m here to tell you it’s all going to be ok. In the last few weeks, I’ve really had to come to terms with this simple truth: Some days I will not be able to write, and that’s just ok. Don’t misunderstand me. If writing is important to you, you should take it seriously, you should schedule times to write, and you should do your best to make time to write, but some days it’s just not going to happen. In those moments, instead of beating yourself up, or feeling like the whole day was a failure, remember it is just ok. Somedays it just is not going to happen, and we as writers have to come to terms with that.

On the bookshelf…
Continuing to work my way through The Hunt for Red October, and I’m glad I took a break from Stormlight to reset. I was anxious to start Rhythm of War, but reading something shorter and totally different has proved to be the right choice. I’m enjoying reading a bit more, reading a bit faster, and enjoying myself all around. As for my prose study, I love the technicalities of this book and how Tom Clancy doesn’t shy away from diving into the nitty gritty of the military, how different agencies work together, how war games work, and the politics of command structures between different countries work. Taking notes!

A Writer’s Journey - Project Progress
As I said in my last update, I had a big breakthrough with chapter one of The Last House of the High People, and as I worked through tying into chapter two, it just got better and better. I’m really pleased with it and am working hard on the prose. My goal for this story has always been to be a precursor to the rest of the series and have major ties to every other book in the series. It will foreshadow everything that comes after it. This is a tall order and has definitely contributed to how long it is taking to write, but ultimately I believe it is going to pay off in the long run.
